“So you really think you’re capable of changing their minds just like that?”
“Uh, yeah, I don’t think I have much of a choice. And I already made an appointment.”
“Well, it’s your head if this all goes wrong”
Muire and I crawl out from under the convenience store and are on our way to the sea. Oh yeah, maybe I should explain myself. I am Deirde an I am a oculum dwarf(it’s a hassle saying that all the time, so we are usually just called dwarves) on the planet of Aquarian. Well, it used to be called Gaea before the dam burst and flooded the whole planet a few millennia ago. The dam was structurally fine, but people thought they could mess with its switches and then, boom. Now, more than 90% of this place is covered in green, cold, water. Thousands fled to the highest mountains and the rest that didn’t were either semi-aquatic, or they were dead.
It’s not all bad now because the Amikiri, crustacean-type sea-monsters, built with the flooded buildings for a new civilization. They were the only intelligent creatures there until the rich and famous cyclops found a way to build breathable buildings there. Cyclopes are just creatures like me but they are very tall. Taller than most of dwarvish buildings. That left us and the poor cyclops to fend for ourselves. That’s why I’m going to do something big. Really big. Things need to change because us dwarves can only invent and hope to get rations in exchange. Then we crawl back under the buildings, where we live, and hope that tomorrow things will be better. It isn’t fair, so I’m going to be the one to change that.
So, here’s the plan: I go to the edge of the dock and ask to go down to the cyclopes’ capital, Zariya. Then I’ll tell them about the terrible living conditions the dwarves , and their own kind are living in. Then, I demand that they think about everyone else, for once. Then I’ll march out of that place and patiently wait for the next sub back to the surface. Well, back to what was initially happening.
“Are you really, really sure about this? You could get kicked out of the sea forever. And that’s like, the whole world.”
“Well I know that, I just really think this is a good idea.”
Well, I’ll be here on the dock waiting for you.”
I nod my head at Murie in a ‘see you later’ manner and walk to the ticketing station.
Purchasing my ticket with the last few copper coins, I wonder if this is a good idea. Sitting on the sub and sinking down into the depths, I think that maybe this isn’t the best idea. Plus I’m getting looks for a cyclops dressed up like he’s going to court. I get off at my stop and strut the whole walkway to the building. I walk up the stairs made for dwarves like me to reach the front desk and tell him about my situation. He just laughs.
“What?” I ask in my sassiest tone. I’m frazzled being down at the capital but I will not get laughed at. This is something important.
“Do you honestly think you can just get into a room full of important people and just demand a change. You’re delusional.”
At this point I’m fuming, but he still asks for me to sit down and says I’ll be called when they’re ready. I swing my legs way off the ground on the high seats.
Finally, they call me and I strut to the conference room. Having to ask someone to open the heavy door kinda killed the whole confident vibe though. I enter and immediately some has to pinch themselves so they wouldn’t laugh at me which buried the confidence in the cold ground. I got up on the podium so they could all seem me. As I stood up there, I realized that I’m in front of some of the most important cyclopes in the city. I gather up the courage to say my first word, shaking.
“Um, hi?” I can already see how this is gonna go.
